The launch of the Aaron Mokoena Foundation took place South Africa on 28th May 2008. The Launch was twofold with a football clinic for children in Boipatong township in Sedibeng Municipality, Aaron's birthplace, followed by the official launch at the Emerald Casino Resort, Vanderbijlpark.
Aaron, some of the South African Premier League football stars and Aaron Mokoena Foundation coaches converged for a soccer clinic at the Boipatong stadium. Over 100 children from 4 local Primary schools participated in a comprehensive fun coaching programme. 'This is where I grew up and I know first-hand how hard life can be for the people here,' says Aaron Speaking at the stadium, Executive Mayor Mofokeng of Sedibeng Municipality appreciated the health implications for the initiative. 'A healthy body breeds a healthy mind, and healthy minds will undeniably breed a healthy nation,' says the executive mayor.
The formal element of the launch took place at the Emerald Casino Resort, Foundation sponsors. Aaron together with Gauteng Province Minister, Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkulu and the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng, Mahole Mofokeng, Martin Rice, CEO of Emerald Casino Resorts and Local Councillor Neville Felix addressed a 250 plus strong audience.
Aaron spoke with passion and told the audience:
"I believe football and sport is a fundamental part of the education of all young people. I believe that all young people should have an opportunity to take part in a range of sporting activities. Participation is important in itself, but football and sport can develop important values and attributes."
"My Foundation will be innovative, modern and responsive breaking new barriers in service delivery, establishing high quality delivery standards whilst defining measurable outputs and deliverables" Over R100 000 was raised for the Foundation during a charity auction of soccer memorabilia.
